The inspiration for Gateway Wheelers came from one man's determination to help his disabled son enjoy cycling. David Patterson tried to build suitable bikes with the help of friends to encourage his son's development.

The club was formed in 1997 and became a registered charity in 2000. Funding from the Northern Rock Foundation in 2006 enabled the club to employ a Development Officer to expand the good work and in 2009 we were successful in receiving support from the Big Lottery Fund's Reaching Communities programme.
